Kern Baby Kern

A short lecture and follow up brief on the difference between optical, metric and manual kerning.

Optical kerning: adjusts the spacing between adjacent characters based on their shapes

Metric kerning: uses kern pairs, which contain information about the spacing of specific pairs of letters

Manual kerning: relies on the human eye to adjust spacing

The follow up brief required us to use the same letters to represent a variety of different companies using only kerning to make subtle changed. This taught me a great deal on the importance of kerning correctly and the impact it can have on both the style and tone of a word.
