OUGD405 - Studio Brief 01 - Liberty Park Colours and Materials

There are many considerations I will have to make based on the awareness of the specific environment in which these signs will be used; the building will house mainly university students and this can bring a particularly unique set of problems. The design will have to reflect the attitudes of young adults aged between 18-21 who have moved away from home for the first time and have become more independent in their lives - it should feel bright, colourful, stylish and fresh but not childlike or patronising, and they shouldn't feel clinical or corporate or outdated.

The colours used within the signage are an important part of these considerations. Liberty Living have recently updated their colour scheme from a navy and sky blue to a dark purple and pink. To allow for maximum coherence not only within the Liberty Park Leeds building, but also every accommodation complex run by Liberty Living across the country, I will use the new colours as well as the small range of colours established in the rebrand's manifesto.

There are a multitude of materials that could be used for the signage, and these include plastics, metals (unfinished or painted), wood or chipboard (unfinished or painted), vinyl stickers, paint applied directly to the wall. The materials used will have to be carefully considered as there could be up to several hundreds of people using the buildings at any one time, so the materials will have to be resilient and hard-wearing, and not easily broken or pulled off the wall.  In this instance, a wall mounted sign of any material might not be considered the most appropriate, whereas a vinyl wall application or a wall painted design would be cheaper to apply and easier to repair if any or all parts are damaged. Specifically for Liberty Park, a vinyl wall mount would be most appropriate for the environment as it's not only cheap and easily fixable, but also brings a stylish and sleek feel to the building.
