OUGD603 - Brief 07 - Chicken Wingdings Type Specimen

Type Specimen

Upon the completion of the typeface, a type specimen was created to showcase the four variants.

As a point of reference for other existing type specimens, brief research was undertaken into the work produced by graphic designer Daniel Reed. Reed specialises in typeface and publication design, and founded DR Foundry in 2017. Examples of his specimens are shown below:

The Chicken Wingding specimen features multiple spreads that detail the complete typeface, as well as feature pages that exhibit single letterforms. Also included are a selection of example phrases, and a centrefold that features a mock 'anatomy of type' illustration, detailing where each of the letterforms originates from.

A short description of the typeface on the final page reads:

Chicken Wingdings is a quirky display typeface inspired by the structural form of chicken. Designed with a lack of awareness for the conventional rules of typography and created with no specific purpose in mind, its irregular mix of cases make it highly illegible and allow typographic errors to remain largely unnoticed.

This specimen provides an overview of the four existing variants within the Wingding family.

The specimen was designed to a custom size of 176mm x 220mm, and printed digitally on G.F Smith White 120gsm. The cover was created using a gloss black vinyl transfer.
