OUGD504 - Studio Brief 01 - Ceramic Production Methods

To explore whether creating ceramic pieces would be viable for this project I undertook research into the possible 'printing' techniques I could use to create text on ceramic material.

Ceramic Decal Transfer Paper
This works like a regular transfer paper for the easy transfer of text or images onto ceramic surfaces. The ceramic can then be glazed and fired as normal.

Screenprinting
A technique that involves pushing different coloured slips or glazes through a pre-made screenprinting screen onto flat ceramic surfaces. Although this technique would allow the same flexibility as regular screenprinting (multi-layer printing of both images and text), it would only work for flat ceramic surfaces.

Letterpress Impressions
In the same way that one might emboss or deboss text into paper, metal or wooden letterpress letters or a pre-cut stamp can be used to create impressions in the surface of clay. Although technically not considered a 'printing' technique it would still an effective and viable way of creating text on a ceramic sculpture or tile.
