OUGD504 - Studio Brief 01 - Publication Sizes and Mock-Up's

Comparing the sizes of traditional broadsheet and tabloid newspapers, I used these standard dimensions to inform the size of this publication. A broadsheet is typically 74cm x59 cm, whereas the smaller tabloid publication is typically 43cm x 28cm. The newspaper need to be accessible to read when used on the metro system, and also be convenient to carry, so I will use the dimensions of a tabloid newspaper as a guide.

Due to the constraints of the risograph printer the largest printable paper size is A3. To use the maximum amount of paper per printed sheet the largest size that the newspaper could then be is 28.8cm height x 20.6cm width.

I produced a range of mock-up's of varying sizes for peer analysis and feedback reflected that a slightly narrower width would actually be more practical - most people agreed that a wider publication would need more space in order to read and that is often not possible on crowded public transport. Despite the differences in publication size being a matter of centimeters, the conclusion of the feedback was to produce a publication with the dimensions of 28.6cm height x 18.6cm width. This would provide enough space to accommodate all of the content while being more suitable to the context in which in would be read.
